Swept Away

Fresh Start

We’ve got tonight, who needs tomorrow?

Your soulful voice continued to fill the stifling air, with expectant faces turned your way. I sat alone with a local brew in hand, frustrated, oblivious to the world around me. Taking one long swig at the cold bottle, you slow danced, not caring when the bartender dropped a tray.

Let’s make it last, let’s find a way.

Determined, your next lines enthralled half the drunken space. Capturing my attention,  I was intrigued by you, who barely glanced my way. The endless night wore on as you hit the next notes.

Turn out the light, come take my hand now.

Whispering, your voice was barely heard this time. For some unknown reason, your coffee colored eyes met mine, mid line. Leaning forward across the filthy table,  I tried to move closer, leasing a whole new perspective on this young, mysterious singer.

In a daze, your heart appeared to have stopped, mine seemingly followed on cue.

We’ve got tonight, why don’t you stay?

Your soft lips, your beautiful face, I was drowning, fast. Standing up, I retrieved few crumpled bills from my left pocket. With one last look, you murmured,

Why don’t you stay?

“We’ve Got Tonight” by Bob Seger from the Stranger in Town album (1978)/ This song  lulled me to sleep whilst in the hospital and I scribbled this one with an IV stuck in my arm. To the well wishers, thank you very much. I am (still) alive and very much well, uhm, alive.

Thank you for never giving up on me.
